Guide
Red fox
The red fox is a small, adaptable omnivore that lives close to both wild land and people, and it uses its droppings as scent-marks placed in plain sight.
Identifying the droppings
- Fox scat is twisted and tapers to a point at one end, usually 5–8 cm long — dog-like, but slimmer and more pointed.
- It is full of clues about the last meal: fur, small bones, feathers, insect cases, and berry seeds are all common.
- It has a strong, musky, unmistakable smell.
- Foxes deposit it on prominent spots — rocks, tree stumps, molehills, path junctions — to mark territory.
In the field
The deliberate placement is the giveaway. A dog rarely leaves droppings neatly on top of a raised rock or tussock, but a fox does exactly that, using visible landmarks as scent posts. Twisted shape, a tapered point, and visible fur or berry seeds separate fox from dog scat.
Because foxes eat almost anything, their droppings change with the season — dark and meaty in winter, full of seeds and insect remains in late summer. This dietary flexibility is why foxes thrive from deep forest to city parks.

In the game
Fox is a flexible answer in the game because it straddles wild and human habitats at the same time, and its omnivore diet separates it from stricter carnivores.
