Guide

Goose

The goose is a grazing bird of lawns, fields, and shorelines, and where a flock has been feeding it leaves a scatter of firm, green droppings that are hard to miss.

Identifying the droppings

  • Droppings are cylindrical and firm — short green-to-brown tubes, often tipped with a white smear of urate the way most bird droppings are.
  • The green colour and coarse fibre come from a diet of grass and shoots.
  • A grazing flock leaves them in large numbers across an area, not in a single tidy pile.
  • Wet grassland, park lawns, farmland, coasts, and lakeshores are the usual places.

In the field

The white urate cap is the quick tell that this is a bird, not a mammal — birds pass waste and droppings together, so a white-tipped green tube is unmistakably avian. The sheer quantity a flock leaves on a mown lawn or waterside path is a goose signature.

Swan droppings are similar but often looser and larger, while smaller birds like pigeons leave much smaller deposits. The firm green tubes of a goose sit in between and cluster wherever the flock has grazed.
