Moose

The moose is the largest deer in the world, and its droppings are correspondingly big — the biggest deer pellets you are likely to find in northern forests.

Identifying the droppings

  • Individual pellets are large ovals or acorn shapes, roughly 2–3 cm long, dropped in piles of dozens to well over a hundred.
  • Winter droppings that come from woody browse are dry, pale brown, and fibrous — almost sawdust-textured — with a dimple on one end and a point on the other.
  • In summer, richer forage produces darker, softer pellets that can clump together into a shapeless mass.
  • Look for them along forest edges, in willow and birch thickets, and near wetlands where moose feed on fresh shoots.

In the field

Size is the quickest way to separate moose from other deer: the pellets are noticeably chunkier than red deer or roe deer droppings, matching the animal's huge body. A large winter pile of pale, woody pellets in boreal forest is a strong moose sign.

Because a moose browses twigs and bark through the cold months, its winter droppings are drier and paler than the near-black pellets of smaller deer. The seasonal switch between hard winter pellets and softer summer clumps is normal and reflects the change from woody browse to lush greenery.

In the game

In PoopGuessr, moose can be confused with other deer, but its northern range and very large adult weight usually separate it from the pack.
